Requirements Analysis and eCommerce System Selection at Merck

As an independent expert, Smart Commerce, together with the IT department, conducted requirement workshops with various stakeholders and supported Merck in creating the necessary requirement documents for the tendering process.

Another important aspect of this tendering phase was to present and evaluate different scenarios for the introduction, implementation, and integration of the new eCommerce solution into the complex system environment for the company. Prior to the actual tendering, another result of the support was the presentation of the total project costs to the management.

IT Architecture Consulting & Code Review at Merck Millipore

Merck Millipore commissioned Smart Commerce to produce an independent report on the quality of the architecture and source code of a new e-commerce project based on the Intershop 7 platform. The report analyzed the following areas:

  • General quality of the source code and adherence to Java Best Practices.
  • Compliance with Intershop 7 architecture and design guidelines.
  • Adherence to proven project approaches in terms of stability and performance.
  • Use of Intershop standard components versus individual customizations.
  • Key issues in architecture (channel concept, localization strategy, product data processing, use of web CMS components).

Smart Commerce was able to rely on a team of professionals with years of experience in software development and architecture in similarly complex and technically challenging projects based on the Intershop platform. Additionally, the source code was automatically scanned for anomalies and errors using a software solution (Sonar Cube) employed by Smart Commerce, creating corresponding analyses and statistics.

The report included an independent assessment of software quality and recommendations for short-term and long-term architectural and source code improvements. The presentation of the report was specially prepared for the target groups of management and development and was presented to them.

Results

The key benefit of the report for the client was to provide management with a meaningful assessment of the software's quality state, which was realized by a new partner and a multitude of developers distributed worldwide. Based on the report, the management was able to make an informed and responsible decision on whether a global rollout is feasible based on the existing software status and which developments should be prioritized for the coming years.
